There are several higher vocational and university studies in which ergonomics play a considerable role, but, in The Netherlands, there is no such a thing as a official higher vocational or university Ergonomics study.

At the university level, ergonomics is often taught after the first study years that have formed a basis in the field of technical sciences, kinematics sciences or social sciences. The subjects that target ergonomics come in the years that follow these basic courses.

When ergonomics is studied from the viewpoint of technical sciences, the focus is mostly on the technical working and living environment. Within social studies (mostly psychology), the focus is on observation, data-processing and task load. In kinematics sciences, the physical capabilities of the human being are especially studied.

Recently, two new higher vocational studies that focus less on the theory than the universities do have been founded.

There is also a postgraduate vocational training, Postdoctorale Beroepsopleiding (PDBO) Vocational Ergonomics that is jointly run by four universities. Ergonomie Opleidingen Nederland (EON) also organises courses in the field of ergonomics. One of them is a half-year basic ergonomics course run by the NVvE in cooperation with the EON.

Some short background stories from people who studied physical or cognitive ergonomics can be found under Students’ experiences and Studying Ergonomics provides a list of studies that are focused on ergonomics.
